What people actually want from Spyfall

What makes these games work is that the tension comes from the players rather than the system. There is no board state to analyse — just what people said and how they said it, and the growing sense that somebody is being slightly too careful. The best rounds are the ones where the group is wrong, and the format has been reinvented repeatedly, from the Chinese party game 谁是卧底 to a shelf of published versions, because the core idea survives almost any presentation. The practical requirements are always the same three things: it has to deal the secret information without anybody being trusted to look away, it has to work for a group of five or six who are already sitting together, and it has to be explainable in under a minute to whoever arrived late. A version that needs a printed deck, a designated moderator, or ten minutes of setup fails the only test that matters, which is whether the group actually plays it a second time.

What Who's the Spy does instead

Who's the Spy deals everybody the same secret word except one player, who gets something close to it or nothing at all. Each player gives one clue out loud, then the table votes. The spy wins by surviving or by working out the real word. Three to eight players, about twenty minutes for three rounds, in a browser with a room code. It has a single-device mode where you pass one phone around, which for a group sitting together is usually better than everybody staring at their own screen — and it is the only game here designed for that.

What it is not

It is word-based rather than location-based, so there is no list of places, no roles to play within a location, and no questioning phase where players interrogate each other in pairs. If the specific structure you want is the location-and-roles one, this is a different game that happens to share a genre. Nobody should arrive expecting a clone.

How Who's the Spy plays

Who's the Spy is a social deduction game for three to eight players, and the best game here for a room of people who already know each other. Everybody is given the same secret word except one player, who gets something close to it or nothing at all. Then you take turns describing your word without saying it, and try to work out who is describing a word they do not have. It is a descendant of the Chinese party game 谁是卧底, and the reason it works is that the spy usually does not know they are the spy until somebody says something that does not quite fit.
